Up till a few months ago for years my dad also got up for work at 5.30am and got home about 10pm
Before that he worked 'nights' and got up at 9.30pm, and got home at midday the next day
He got full weekends off and better holidays than the korean guy though

that sucks.

my twenty hours a week is still painful.

The funny thing about Japan and South Korea is that if they just got rid of their house wife tradition and both parents went to work no one would have to sacrifice his life to reach the appropriate quota of man hours.

Last spring I worked between 14 and 16 hours each day for several months during my 3rd year bachelor project. The valuable lesson I learned was that working insanely long hours does not improve the quality of your work; you will only get "more" of the same quality.

The problem with dual income is that it increases costs as well. Primarily second car syndrome but also in a lot of other ways (child care is another big one).

Consider this: more women in this country work than at any other time in history but average household income is actually lower than it was in the 60s (when you take inflation into account).

Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs?
Your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar?
Not one now, to mock your own grinning?

Well speaking from my situation (which is very atypical probably) my mum also worked all those years but only school hours and with no 2nd car so there definitely weren't additional costs with the additional worker

Part of that is because there are more households. Especially single earner households composed of a single parent and her child(ren).

WTF I GOT RATE THROTTLED AFTER ONLY ONE POST! ONE, SINGLE, POST!! THIS WAS TO BE MY SECOND, AND I GOT RATE THROTTLED!!! [/rant][/caps]

well, i was going to post some smart-ass comment about DrNick's income, but I think I'm too irritated to do that now.

SERIOUSLY. ONE. SINGLE. POST.

Kiv, I don't know how, but this is your fault. I'm sure of it. Please ban yourself for me.

I would have thought childcare cost more than a second car, especially during the holidays.

This month I have mostly been playing Zelda Breath of the Wild

It does? Though there is a lot of hidden expense to owning a car.

Well that depends on the car admittedly anything less than 10 years old will spend 10% of the time telling you to take it for a service, but older cars don't have computers to do that.

i made the mistake of buying an old afla 156... ended up paying half its price in servicing and stuff

i currently drive a nissan tiida that required next to no servicing and it still accounts for the biggest portion of my budget

I have a 1998 Ford Falcon. 4 Litre Straight 6 = $$$

I bought it for $5,100 AU about 18 months ago, and so far, I've spent about $2,000 on servicing and replacement parts alone.

EDIT:
Though, by now, I've replaced all the brakes, lines, hoses and other such small things that periodically need replacing so it should be fine to run for a decent while now.

I have a 97 Honda Prelude.
Just had to do the 200,000km service on it recently and it cost a lot (to do properly, I probably could have just changed the timing belt and called it a day for a couple hundred).

TK you only needed to say - i made the mistake of buying an old afla, that pretty much says it all.

I currently have a 2005 VW Golf estate, costs much more than my old 1996 Ford Escort in services (mainly because I didn't get it serviced), although the Golf runs a lot nicer.

I have a car with enough power to move a small house, an engine capacity big enough to bathe an infant in, and a fuel (in)efficiency of roughly 20L/100km when I'm in a hurry.

Your guilt is ineffective on me.
