Eh it's theorized by some that the chemicals we work with have an effect but it's about as solid of a theory as fighter pilots having more daughters due to high G's.

Not a large enough sample to disprove anything.

Glad I don't fit into the unfit group though. Yay speedskating training 3x a week!

Which is why females that are malnourished or sickly are more likely to produce daughters than sons (because a malnourished mother is unlikely to produce healthy offspring, and a weak son is less likely to produce grandchildren than a weak daughter). I think sons are more likely to be aborted if the mother undergoes some sort of trauma while pregnant as well.
Indeed! If that's right I've got a mechanism for it! I posted about this in another thread I think, but we're learning that DNA can be manipulated by having little tags placed on it to make it be turned off. Plus, you can deactivate entire chunks of DNA by methylating the histones. It's been shown that malnourishment can lead to smaller (but longer living, as the two are correlated due to decreased number of required cell generations) offspring for generations. Apparently, when the DNA is altered, it sticks around!

Tally ho for the antro-bio team up work!

Call me out if I fail or seem to fail to live up to either of these. Either I will learn something, you will learn something, or we both will.

NO! Mete uses shovels and books and lasers and bears and bones to do his work, while I use microscopes and ugh....hmm...ok yeah so I can't really get around not using computers.

Computers make my job easier since I can just use Spectroscopy to identify stuff rather than having to react it to see if it has certain groups on it and such.

That was always cool in chemistry class but doing it all the time to identify everything would be a rail pain in the ass. Praise be to technology.

Was I the last generation of o-chem students to have to do actual bench reactions?

Coming home with my hands dried out from acetone and still reeking of furans and shit. Don't miss it. Although for our final exam, we had access to the HPLC to compare our results so we could do some last-minute refinement tests.

Also, where's Morgoth? I see him surfin and not postin'

Like a posting ninja, Morgoth simply uses stealth and waits behind bush, cave, or door. He's flowing like the water and flowers. He can seal himself away in mud or snow, or take cover amongst the trees of the forest. He gazes at the moon and plots his attack. And finally, when the moment is right, he silently readies his shurikens and katana and then makes the thread his prey. By the time he's posted his genius insights, you are already dead, and only a minimal pool of blood is left as the one sign that anything ever happened.

No...we still have to...plus our IR scanner barely works (my alcohol had no peaks past 2000...that's a problem ). Moreover, they won't let us use H-NMR because they say it's too expensive, which may be true, but honestly is it that much more expensive than constantly replacing IR's? I'd rather do H-NMR and GC-MS and know what my molecule is pretty quickly than do IR about 5 times to finally get a good result, and still have to guess based on BP.

We've got NMR, MassSpec, IR and a bunch of others here. It would simply take too long and be too expensive to have Unknown labs do identification by reaction. It's easier to Purify it, react it with a known molecule and then spectrosopically analyse it.

Also, you must be pretty bad at IR (On top of having a shitty IR) to need to do it more than once

Man, it has to be the machine. Like, you can run a card (for the solution IR), then rerun it, and get something totally different. It's that bad. This whole organic lab class is bad. It's the only lab that doesn't offer an honor option, and even then it still manages to disappoint. I was the only one in my class that knew to point out something was badly wrong when a primary chlorine went Sn1 in one of our trials. Everyone else was just blank-faced. Turns out they had mismatched the bottle labels... :-/

Oh well, at least in my actual research I get a good, expensive machinery!

I also get to commit genocide on my custom designed races of e coli and drosophila when they don't behave as requested!

our university had IR and mass spec, 1H NMR and 13C NMR and I think some other nifty tools.

I'm going to bed now, been a mostly shit day for me today.
