Eco Maps mode is an excellent addition to the game, making it possible for Comp Stomps to be played with alternate starts - on any map, and with gates for AI, and extra town centers that can be built, alongside extra Outposts, War Huts, Blockhouses, etc.
I recommend that in 40 Minute Treaty, a player uses this mode and has twice as many allies as opponents. So 3v1, or 5v2, with either two allies and one opponent, or four allies and two opponents. I also recommend playing on Hard with Flycatcher + Guardsman AI.
In the boom period, a player can play less seriously, gathering berries and starting trees and having a single villager on coin. Then he can build 5 villagers, a house, a market, and let the game sit for a while. Ten minutes later he can return and get up in ages with his allies. After this, he can ask resources from his allies, when they are in Industrial and Imperial Ages. Finally he can build his army, go to Imperial Age, and take the fight to the enemy with his allies armies leading at the front.
I recommend this style of play if anyone wants to play 40 minute treaty, but does not wish to watch their boom and minutely calculate every detail of the match, and also if they want a long match but clear victory without stupendous amounts of effort. |

If the AI isn't challenging enough on a 30 Minute Treaty on Eco Maps, I suggest taking a Handicap bonus for both you and the computer allies and opponents.
Such as 2v1, 100% Handicap Bonus.
Handicap makes resources generate faster, and gives players more resources from trees, fish, mines, berries, huntables, etc.
Giving Handicap to the Computer also will give the AI more resources to work with, and if you like building from scratch, but not sticking in early ages too long, the Handicap Bonus is for you.
On a 30 Minute Treaty with 100% Handicap, I got 3647 score (India), ally got 1684 score (Sioux), and opponent got 2864 score (Chinese). Map was Eco Honshu.
Train rates aren't affected by Handicap, but I believe creation of buildings is affected, and perhaps technology research time.
Anyways, rather than having a perfect AI opponent, I recommend this for this mode, to make more eventful games.[Edited on 07/07/22 @ 05:15 AM]

There is another way to play Handicap with Flycatcher + Guardsman AI that makes sense and is fun. Choosing Moderate Difficulty in 3v3 with 75% handicap bonus for Humans and Computers means that in a 30 minute treaty the Computer will get 1600 score on almost any map.
I have tested Hard with 100% Handicap on 3v3 on 30 minute treaty, and the AI is too hard to push off Deccan Cliffs. Our team came close to beating one of the three, but the other two had 3600 and 5000 score. They also kept producing armies, and the one almost beat built back his base and trained armies to support his allies. So 100% should be used for if you want to play against a computer opponent with a particular nation that you want to be strong to fight against.
In a 75% Handicap scenario, games will last about 1 Hour, with Imperial Age times being anywhere from 19 minutes to 25 minutes for the various AIs. Having Moderate with a Handicap also means that it gets more resources, but still is capped at 185 population with 85-90 villagers. So it will be a winning battle for the Human Allies, and it should not be a problem if you wish to boom with either a crummy strategy or a great strategy. You will get 75% more resources, and get them 75% faster. Remember that Moderate works on Single Player and LAN games and does not work online, because I changed handicaps from 0.65 to 1.15.
I also recommend that with AI games, you play with a bonus, primarily for fun. My normal bonus is to have custom maps with extra resources, and I'm trying something new with Eco Maps + Handicap.
It can be fun to give yourself a 50% handicap, but remember to give other players the same, especially for comps if you want them to age up quickly on this game mode. |

On Flycatcher + Guardsman AI with Eco Maps:
Also try Hard Difficulty with 80% Handicap with 4v2 on Eco Maps with a 30 minute treaty, and also 80% Handicap for yourself!
Expert on 3v2, Treaty - No Blockade (40 minute treaty), 100% Handicap, is too hard. AIs have 3x building construction speed, meaning they can rebuild at lightning fast rates. Unending resources means AI can replenish troops before you can capitalize on a victory. Distance to enemy base means it takes forever for offensives to be accomplished by allies. Highly not recommended way to play. |

I have uploaded a mini-mod that enables gates for the AI on non-custom maps:
https://www.moddb.com/games/age-of-empires-iii/downloads/gates-for-ai-mod-proto-mod#downloadsform
This mod also makes basic changes to the Proto file which handles units. It is meant for comp stomps on built-in maps, and it works online if all players have it installed! Included an easy install/uninstall! |
